Ray A. Johnston was born on October 31, 1923 in Astoria, Oregon. Johnston graduated high school in Aberdeen, Washington before enlisting in the Navy in 1943. While Johnston was trained to operate anti-aircraft artillery, Johnston ended up serving in the army with the 106th Infantry Division. In October 1944, the division was shipped to Europe where they fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Johnston's unit was captured in December 1944. Johnston and the rest of his unit were liberated in April 1945, leaving Europe in May.

The Ray Johnston World War II memoir describes Johnston's service from 1943-1945, from his initial enlistment to his discharge in December 1945. Photocopies of photographs were enclosed with the memoir.
