Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Ruth Ittner (January 12, 1918-June 3, 2010) was a outdoor recreation advocate and public policy planner in Seattle, Washington. She worked on trail planning and development, both in her position at the University of Washington (1952-1981) and as a volunteer in The Mountaineers, 1969 to approximately 1990. Ruth became chairperson of the Mountaineers Trail Planning and Development Committee (later the Trails Advisory Committee) in 1969 and became involved in reviewing trail management plans, preservation of trail habitat, conservation policies that affect trails and encouraging users to take active steps in becoming responsible trail users. She coordinated conferences and helped to create Sno Park, Washington State Parks' winter recreation program and authored several pamphlets and brochures. She worked on the Burke-Gillman Trail, the Tiger Mountain Trail System and the Mountaineers Trail Inventory Project, and the Iron Goat Trail, which first began with her idea to build a trail to mark Washington's centennial.
