- Robert Sand is a social and environmental activist who was involved in the movement that resisted placement of Experimental Missiles (MX), later called Peacekeeper missiles, in silos in Montana and other western states in the 1980s. This collection contains materials he collected related to the arms race, nuclear disarmament, MX placement, and community organization around these issues.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Robert Sand was raised in south central North Dakota. He and his wife, Mary, are active advocates for various conservation and social issues, including tribal rights and nuclear disarmament. They have also held various teaching positions at Salish Kootenai College located on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Pablo, Montana.
Robert and Mary Sand have one son, Chris. The couple lived in Montana for many years and eventually moved back to North Dakota where they were living and working as of 2015.

Robert Sand participated in various aspects of nuclear disarmament activism within Montana. This collection contains publications and reports from local, state, and federal entities and organizations involved in nuclear disarmament. It also includes materials related to citizen efforts to resist further placement of intercontinental ballistic missiles in the western United States. Activist organizations and coalitions represented include Western Solidarity, Montana Citizens to End the Arms Race, and Citizens for an MX Free Montana. The collections also includes correspondence from various members of congress and members of various activist organizations.

This series contains materials relating to Western Solidarity, a coalition of organizations devoted to resisting Peacekeeper Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (then called MX or Missile Experimental) deployment in the western United States by the federal government. Western Solidarity was formed in 1982 with members representing the interests of Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. This series contains newsletters, correspondence, member biographies, and general information about the activities of the coalition.
