Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Lehi Ferdinand Hintze joined the faculty of the Oregon State College Geology Department in 1949 as an Instructor. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1951, a position he held until his resignation in 1955 to become a faculty member at Brigham Young University. Hintze completed his undergraduate degree in geology at the University of Utah in 1941; he earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1951. Hintze's doctoral dissertation was on the geology of western Utah; after his return to Utah in 1955, he did extensive mapping, research, and writing on the geology of Utah and published more than 100 geologic quadrangle maps of Utah. Hintze retired from Brigham Young University in 1986.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Lehi F. Hintze Geological Reconnaissance Maps of Oregon consist of geologic maps prepared and assembled by Hintze for much of the state of Oregon. Most of the maps are compilations of published geologic mapping, unpublished geologic mapping done by graduate students at Oregon State College and the University of Oregon, and mapping by Hintze. The maps in Series III are published geologic maps, many of which have been annotated by Hintze. The maps reflect geologic mapping done from the mid-1930s through the 1950s. Most of the maps are hand-colored and have copious annotations indicating the sources of the information or noting questions or corrections. Some of the maps include cross sections. The maps vary in scale from 1:24,000 to 1:400,000; most of the maps are 1:62,500 or 1:125,000 scale.
In addition to mapping done by Hintze, the maps document geologic mapping done by Edwin T. Hodge, W.D. Wilkinson, Howel Williams, William H. Taubeneck, and Robert G. Coleman.

Arrangement
This collection consists of seven series: I. Indexes and Statewide Maps; II. F Series Maps; III. G Series Maps; IV. M Series Maps; V. S Series Maps; VI. T Series Maps; and VII. U Series Maps. Within each series, the maps are arranged numerically.
Custodial History
These maps were acquired by the Oregon State University Libraries Map Room in the 1980s or earlier.
Acquisition Information
The collection was transferred from the Oregon State University Libraries' maps collection to the Special Collections & Archives Research Center in 2013.
Processing Note
Most of the maps were treated as a collection within the Map Room and were assigned the call number G4291 C5 [n.d.] O7. However, many of the maps in Series III had been assigned individual call numbers within the Storage Maps. These individually cataloged maps have been united with the other Hintze maps to form this collection.
Related Materials
The Lehi F. Hintze Publications are available in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections at Brigham Young University. The Special Collections & Archives Research Center holdings include the Geosciences Department Records (RG 208) as well as the papers of several Oregon State geology faculty and alumni -- Ellen G. Moore; George W. Moore; Roger L. Nielsen; Earl L. Packard; and William H. Taubeneck. Current geologic maps of Oregon are part of the Oregon State University Libraries general map collection.
