Historical NoteReturn to Top

Eugene G. "Pat" Patterson was born to Mattie and David Patterson of Pullman, Washington, in 1919. In 1940, he married Pullman High School classmate Maxine Weeks. He attended Washington State College (later Washington State University), where he received a B.A. in Political Science in 1946. During his time at WSC, Patterson served as a U.S. Army Infantry Officer in the South Pacific, and was awarded numerous honors including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He returned to WSC in 1952 working as an Alumni Director for twenty-six years, as well as serving on the Athletic Council and as a part-time golf coach during the 1950s. In 1972, Patterson was elected to the state legislature as a representative for the 9th District. After four terms, Patterson was elected as a Washington State Senator, serving from 1980 to 1992. As a state legislator, Patterson sat on multiple committees including those focused on higher education and transportation. He remained a lifetime resident of Pullman until his death in 2004. The WSU Alumni Association created The Patterson Alumni Wall of Honor in recognition of Patterson's work at WSU and his support of education in the state of Washington.
