Dental Public Health Sciences is a research-oriented department that operates mainly in the interface between public health and dentistry. The role of teaching in the pre-doctoral program involves didactic and clinical training in behavioral sciences, specifically in treating anxious and fearful patients through its clinical component, the Dental Fears Research Clinic; as well as introduction to the use of research methodology for lifelong learning through courses and mentoring of students participating in the SURF program.
The department also houses the Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program for dental hygienists; a funded postdoctoral training program in Public Health and Behavioral Research Training, which is unique nationally; the Biometry Core of the Comprehensive Center for Oral Health Research (which conducts the annual Summer Institute in Clinical Dental Research Methods for faculty from dental schools, including graduate courses in biostatistics and clinical epidemiology in dentistry, taken by postgraduate students from the School of Dentistry); and several major research projects. Prior to 1987, this department was referred to as the Department of Community Dentistry.
The Departments of Oral Biology and Dental Public Health Sciences merged on July 1, 2011 to create the Department of Oral Health Sciences (OHS).
