Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Frank M. Ingalls was born in 1861 in Iowa. He came to Missoula, Montana, in about 1890 and operated a photography studio. He mostly took portraits of Missoulians, in the studio or in other locations. By 1903, this studio was located on the fifth floor of the First National Bank Building in downtown Missoula. He left Missoula in 1912 and went to Butte, Montana, where he operated the Dore Studio, another photographic portrait business, until 1928. He then relocated to Anaconda, Montana, where he operated another portrait studio.

He was married to Annabel Ingalls; they had one daughter. He died on November 7, 1934, in Anaconda, at the age of 73. He is buried in Missoula.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The majority of the Ingalls photographs are studio portraits of Missoula residents in the 1890s and 1900s. The vast majority are unidentified, but include portraits of families, children, men, women, soldiers, African-Americans, and Chinese. Many appear to have been taken for major life occasions like christenings, First Communion, graduations, and weddings. A portion of identified portraits are of both prominent and less-known Missoula residents. Non-portraits in the collection are mostly of Missoula's built environment, particularly downtown, immediately south of the Clark Fork River, and churches.

Arrangement

A small number of the images were described at the item level during original processing.

Custodial History

Ingalls apparently left his negatives behind when he left Missoula. R.H. McKay, who ran his photography studio from Ingalls' former location, reprinted some of the negatives. McKay apparently left the negatives behind when he closed his photography business, and they remained in the First National Bank building until time of donation to the Archives.

Acquisition Information

Gift of Theodore Jacobs, 1974.

Processing Note

The photographs were listed individually in 1975. In 2004, a collection-level finding aid was produced for the first time, and formerly unprocessed images were added to the collection.
