Tlingit Totem Pole at Pioneer Square in Seattle,
Washington In 1899, a group of businessmen removed a Tlingit totem pole
from a village in Alaska and placed it in Pioneer Square. An arsonist burned it
down in 1938, after which the city sent the remaining pieces back to the tribe.
The tribe then carved a new totem pole and sent it to Seattle after being paid
for the original. The totem pole still stands today.

Boats navigating the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in
Seattle, Washington The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are a complex of locks that allow
boats to pass between Lakes Washington and Union and the Puget Sound. The locks
help maintain the water level of both lakes and prevent the mixing of sea water
from the Puget sound with the fresh water of the lakes.

Washington Spirit Lake was a popular tourist destination for many years up
until the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. During the eruption, the blast and
resulting debris avalanche temporarily displaced the lake's water, and resulted
in the lake's surface area increasing and its depth decreasing.
