Pulsipher was born in 1827 at Spafford, Onondaga County, New York. He and his family were early Mormon converts who traveled with other LDS members from Kirtland, Ohio, to Nauvoo, Illinois, and then to Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Rozilla Huffaker, who later died. He then married Ester M. Murray Barnum. Pulsipher and his family settled in the Hebron area.

The John Pulsipher diaries (1827-1891) consist of two volumes of diary entries by Pulsipher. He tells of his early life, his conversion to Mormonism, and his marraiges. He also recounts his calling to the Native American mission where he had many experiences with the Arapahoe, Navajo, Piute, Shoshone, and Ute tribes. Volume two mainly focuses on his day-to-day life
