Historical NoteReturn to Top

Jewish Women International (JWI), a service and advocacy organization for the Jewish community, has its roots in the women's auxiliaries to B'nai B'rith. B'nai B'rith, which means "sons of the covenant," is the oldest and largest American Jewish service organization. Founded in 1843 as Bundes Bruder by 12 German Jews in New York, B'nai B'rith had as its purpose "to unite Israelites in the work of protecting their highest interests and those of humanity." The organization is open to all branches of Judaism. It is dedicated to philanthropy and has offered assistance in both natural and manmade disasters in the U.S. and abroad. Other projects are youth organizations, orphanages, hospitals, libraries, vocational-training programs, and Hillel religious facilities at U.S. colleges, etc. Local chapters meet in cities around the nation.

The first B'nai B'rith women's auxiliary, Ruth Lodge No. 1, the Daughters of Judah was founded in 1897. By the late 1950s, auxiliaries had been replaced by chapters of B'nai B'rith Women.

There were three chapters of B'nai B'rith Women in Washington State, according to the records of JWI: Two chapters in Seattle and one in Spokane. In Seattle, Chapter No. 647 of B'nai B'rith Women was formed in 1948. The chapter replaced B'nai B'rith Ladies' Auxiliaries throughout the area.

In 1990, B'nai B'rith and B'nai B'rith Women formalized their relationship as affiliated but independent organizations. In 1995, B'nai B'rith Women changed its name to Jewish Women International (JWI).

No. 647 and the other Seattle chapter closed in 2001. Spokane's chapter closed in August 2004. There are currently no JWI chapters in the state of Washington.
