Biographical NoteReturn to Top
President, Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation, Seattle. 1899- . A member of the Rodosto Sephardim, Henry Benezra spent his early life in Istanbul and emigrated from there to New York in 1911. In 1918 he arrived in Seattle, where he was recruited for the Student Army Training Camp at the University of Washington. He studied electrical engineering at the University graduating in 1920. He worked for Western Electric from about 1922 to 1924, installing switching machinery for telephone exchanges in Seattle. During the main part of his career he worked for Puget Sound Power and Light. He worked for Seattle City light several years thereafter. Benezra affiliated with Sephardic Bikur Holim and served several scattered terms as president, beginning in the late 1920s. He introduced English into the congragation's services and business meetings. He was one of the major forces working for amalgamation of the three Sephardic synagogues in Seattle from the late 1920s into the 1950s.

Scope and Content: Correspondence, speeches, writings and notes, financial records, newsletter "Progress"; 1927-1940.
These papers reflect Benezra's efforts as president and as leader of Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation to unite the various Sephardic congregations in Seattle from 1927 through the 1930's. He wrote numerous articles promoting his ideas of greater unity.
