Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Charles E. Remsberg, a banker and attorney, was born in West Lebanon, Indiana on May 20, 1863 and died in Seattle on April 19, 1945. He was elected as the first secretary of the Seattle Port Commission, a position which he held for 12 years, after he had worked on the campaign to win the voter approval that came in September 1911. Remsberg, as an attorney, was a partner of S.P. Dixon in the Fremont State Bank and in S.P. Dixon and Co., Real Estate and insurance.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
General Correspondence, primarily outgoing.
Most of the routine business correspondence about property sales and management has been destroyed with a sample retained to show the flavor of the times and the development of the Fremont district of Seattle. The bulk of the remaining papers consists of Remsberg's outgoing letters on civic matters. As secretary of the Seattle Port Commission during the years represented here, 1911-1914, Remsberg supported public ownership of the tidelands and the Lake Washington Ship Canal project. A few letters were authored by S.P. Dixon, but it is difficult to distinguish his from Remsberg's.
Another interest of Remsberg's that is represented here is his effort to establish a Music chair at the University of Washington. There are letters addressed to Professors Kane and Padelford in support of this proposal. Remsberg's activity in this sphere was prompted by the fact that his daughter Mabel was interested in continuing her music studies into college, but would have been unable to do so if she matriculated at the University of Washington.
