Biographical NoteReturn to Top
In the early 1990s Seattle radio station, KCMU, began to shift their focus from volunteer DJs and original programming to syndicated programs produced and distributed by National Public Radio and the University of Pennsylvania. Many listeners were outraged that their familiar programs were being replaced by canned non-Pacific Northwest focused material. Former KCMU volunteers and listeners founded Censorship Undermines Radio Station Ethics (CURSE), an activist group aimed at defunding KCMU. In retaliation, KCMU instituted a "no criticism policy" in which volunteers or staff who voiced opinions against KCMU were fired. CURSE filed suit against this practice and in 1994 the US District Court for the Western District of Washington struck down the policy.
