Historical NoteReturn to Top

In January 1897, representatives of various union locals in the Anaconda, Montana, area established the Anaconda Building Trades Congress. The purpose of this organization was to promote unity of action among area workers. Unions represented in the Congress included bricklayers, painters, carpenters, plumbers, granite cutters, and building laborers. Officers included O.B. Church, H.B. Brigham, James McKeague, and George Tucker. In January 1899, the Congress merged with the Deer Lodge County Trades and Labor Council. New unions added to the organization included butchers, cooks, barbers, tailors, and musicians. In 1901, the name was changed to Anaconda Central Labor Council. The Council continues to operate under the auspices of the AFL-CIO.
