Samuel Joseph Stillwell, the great uncle of Ray Owens, was born September 2, 1859 in Cambell Co. Kentucky. After working in building construction in San Francisco he came to Seattle in 1889 and did engineering work for various Pacific Northwest cities. He worked with Grant Smith and Company in 1907 with the start of the Denny Regrade work. Samuel's brother, James B. Stillwell was born in 1872 and moved to Portland in 1891 and then to Seattle in 1908. Samuel and James started the Stillwell Brothers Construction Company that was responsible for some Denny Regrade work and were contracted for digging work for the Lake Washington Ship Canal in 1912.
