Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Edmund C. Goddard was born in Monroe, Wisconsin, in May 1862. He arrived in Portland in 1888 and started his career in shoe retailing in 1890 as an agent for James Means shoes. E. C. Goddard & Co. began officially in 1893, and moved to 129 6th (now 521 NW 6th Ave.) in 1895. Five years later, Joseph F. Kelly joined Goddard as business partner and moved the business to the Oregonian building, at the corner of SW 6th and Washington Streets. Goddard retired from shoe retail in 1910 and spent time on his farm in Underwood, Skamania County, Washington, where he died on June 12, 1918.
Goddard married Minnie McCracken in 1899 and they had one daughter, Elizabeth.
