Historical NoteReturn to Top

Louis Sanford Goodman (1907-2000) was one of the first faculty members of the University of Utah College of Medicine, serving from the early 1940s to the 1990s. Goodman was a pharmacologist who is best known for his work, co-authored with Yale University Professor Alfred Gilman, on The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics (PBOT). After PBOT's publication in 1941, it became the most authoritative and widely used textbook in the field of pharmacology. The book had four editions, and when the fifth edition came into print, Gilman's son, Alfred Goodman Gilman, became an associate editor. In 1994, A.G. Gilman won the Nobel Prize in medicine.

Goodman received a bachelor's degree in 1928 from Reed College in Portland, Oregon. In 1932 he received both a master's of arts and medical degree from the University of Oregon School of Medicine. He worked as a house officer at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and in 1934, was appointed a National Research Council Fellow in Pharmacology at Yale University, and in 1937 he worked as an assistant professor. In 1943, he became a professor and chairman of pharmacology and physiology at the University College of Medicine, and left that post a year later to become chairman and professor of pharmacology at the University of Utah College of Medicine. During the 1940s, Goodman helped pioneer the chemical treatment of cancer. In 1971, Goodman retired from the University of Utah.
