Avrom Yitzhak Sandack (6/26/1913-1/7/2011), better known as A. Wally Sandack, was an attorney and politician in Utah. He was an active participant in the National Democratic Conventions, was a member of the University of Utah Board of Regents, and served on the Lay Advisory Board of Holy Cross Hospital.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The A. Wally Sandack papers (1902-1994) consist of materials resulting from Sandack's activities as an attorney and politician in Utah. Included is biographical information, campaign and inaugural documents for national and local figures (such as John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Calvin L. Rampton), correspondence, news clippings, publications, scrapbooks, reports, legal documents, rosters, bulletins, and meeting minutes. Also included are materials relating to the John Birch Society and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Judaism, and United States involvement in war. Of particular interest are original newspapers documenting the United States' declaration of war on Japan, Franklin D. Roosevelt's death, and the Normandy invasion. Also of interest is a scrapbook containing descriptions of war planes and ships.
The addendum consists of A. Wally Sandack's personal files pertaining to various legal cases he counseled for in the late 1950s-1960s. The cases included the Troy O. Nance and Thomas Hanley v. the Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA). Sandack represented Nance during the initial trial and the following appeal. The SMWIA expelled Nance from the union on the grounds of improper conduct. Nance sued for damages, and won. The SMWIA appealed the ruling, and won a large reduction in the damages they were required to reimburse to Nance and his co-plaintiff Thomas Hanley; State of Utah v. Verne Alfred Braasch and Melvin LeRoy Sullivan. Sandack represented the accused during the initial trial and the following appeals. Braasch and Sullivan confessed to the killing of a gas station attendant, and were convicted. They appealed this conviction on the claim that their confessions were coerced; Marguerite Robinson v. Oscar Robinson. Sandack represented Oscar Robinson throughout a lengthy divorce and custody battle with his estranged wife. Oscar felt his court-ordered alimony was excessive compared to his income, and that his wife was mentally unfit to have custody of the children anyway; John Allen Lee v. Diane Ross. Sandack represented John Allen Lee during the civil suit over a car accident with Diane Ross. Lee was allegedly injured in this accident, and sued for damages to his health and quality of life, accusing negligence on the part of Ross.
