Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Dr. Sanford Christie Barnum was born in Oakland Valley, Suffolk County, New York, on August 24, 1838. He studied dentistry under his uncle, Joseph Clowes, in New York before furthering his education at the New York College of Dentistry, graduating in 1868. He is credited for inventing and introducing into practice the dental rubber dam, during the period 1862 to 1864. Barnum gifted the invention to the dental profession, receiving accolades from many dental societies and was given this album. The gift of the photo album is documented in the 'History of Dental Surgery' Volume 2, copyright 1909, pp 417-420.
