Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Dr. Sanford Christie Barnum was born in Oakland Valley, Suffolk County, New York, on August 24, 1838. He studied dentistry under his uncle, Joseph Clowes, in New York before furthering his education at the New York College of Dentistry, graduating in 1868. He is credited for inventing and introducing into practice the dental rubber dam, during the period 1862 to 1864. Barnum gifted the invention to the dental profession, receiving accolades from many dental societies and was given this album. The gift of the photo album is documented in the 'History of Dental Surgery' Volume 2, copyright 1909, pp 417-420.

Written on verso: To Dr Barnum with regards of John W. Crane,
Paris, 24 Sep 1875, 7 Rue Scribe.
In 1840, Dr. Crane, a well respected dentist in the U.S. and
Europe, became embroiled in a controversy for refusing to subscribe to a new
publication The American Journal of Dental Science
as he believed that any professional dentist should have a medical degree,
M.D., but none of the editorial staff dentists had that degree. Dr. Crane was
elected to the Office of Secretary of the American Dental Society of Europe, in
September, 1878.
