Historical NoteReturn to Top
Henry Baldwin wrote historical sketches for the Marshfield, Oregon (now known as Coos Bay) newspaper, Weekly Coast Mail in 1879.
The sketches were based on a journal that was found in a scrapbook created by John Hedden, son of Cyrus Hedden. That scrapbook contained pages of a journal kept by L.L. Williams.
L.L. Williams and Cyrus Hedden had been a part of an "exploring party" that had traveled through Southern Oregon in 1850. The journal contained an account of the "harrowing experiences" of the party, and "gives graphic description" of encounters with "Indians" of Southern Oregon (Sackett). According to Sheldon Sackett, almost all members of the party were killed except Williams and Cyrus Hedden.
Sackett wrote that Henry Baldwin transcribed the journal pages for his "Historical Sketches" articles that Sackett thought first appeared in the Coast Mail newspaper in 1879.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The collection contains photocopies of the historical sketches, which were written by Henry Baldwin, and published in the Weekly Coast Mail around 1879.
The sketches contain information regarding the exploration party of 1850, and their encounters with Indians of Southern Oregon.
There is also a historical write-up by Sheldon Sackett, written in 1938, which explains that L.L. Williams journal of 1851 was found in 1937, inside a scrapbook belonging to John Hedden. He also explains the history of the Weekly Coast Mail.
Sackett's write-up also explains that of the historical sketches that exist in the collection, numbers one through six are missing. Numbers seven through twenty are available. Number twenty-one is also available, and Sackett states that it was "written by Baldwin." Perhaps then, the other sketches are true transcriptions of the journal, and only the last was "written" by Baldwin.
What is unclear is whether the sketches are only reproductions of the journal, or of other information from the scrapbook. Not all of the sketches have to do with the exploration party of 1850.
