Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Thula Walker Hardenbrook arrived in Virginia City, Montana Territory in 1865. The family then moved on to Salt Lake City and to Challis, Idaho. She was the great-grandmother of Montana historian K. Ross Toole. She was a resident of Anaconda, Montana, in 1887, when this account was written.

The diary provides an account of a trip through Yellowstone National Park that Thula Hardenbrook took in the summer of 1887. She describes preparing for the journey, meeting other travelers, describes the appearance of Butte, Montana, details of the landscape and landmarks by their specific names. Most of the journal is written during the journey itself, though the last page is a reminiscence of the trip.
