Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
Built in 1894 in Auburn, Washington by Aaron S. Neely, the mansion is an example of Victorian architecture. The mansion took three years to build and replaced the log cabin Aaron and his wife, Sara, had lived in since 1881. Logs were hauled out and cut at the Neely sawmill in Kent to make the frame for the mansion and the decorative details. Electricity was added to the property after WWII. In 1973 the Auburn Art Council placed the property on the National Register of Historic Places. The Neely Mansion Association, a nonprofit historical society, took ownership of the property to restore it for the public.
