Summary
The DeMuth Photographs are mostly images of the construction of the Hebgen Dam on the Madison River, taken by DeMuth prior to his death in 1913. A few images show DeMuth as a graduating student, a young man, and in the construction camp on the upper Madison River, and three images show the capture of young elk calves in winter by DeMuth and an unidentified companion. The construction pictures include images of the workmen's camp, the sawmill producing cut timbers for concrete forms and a water diversion tunnel, construction activity in winter and summer, and both steam and horse-powered earth moving equipment.

Biographical NoteReturn to Top

David Rollin DeMuth was born on November 3, 1885 in Peru, Indiana. He moved to Bozeman, Montana to attend the Montana College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1906 and lived with the W. D. Tallman family. DeMuth graduated in 1910 with a degree in civil engineering, and shortly thereafter he was employed by the Madison River Power Company to supervise the construction of the Hebgen Dam on the upper Madison River. When completed in 1914 the dam was a concrete-core earthen embankment structure of 85 feet tall and 721 feet long, used to store and regulate water for other downstream reservoirs and hydroelectric power plants. On June 15, 1913, DeMuth fell into the Madison River and drowned when he was swept over the dam's spillway.
