Historical NoteReturn to Top

It appears that not all of the camp photographs were taken at the same camp. Only two include any geographic identifiers. A portion of the caption on the back of one photograph - which features a German soldier laying propped on his side, eating from a can of meat and beans - reads "R.W.E., Portland, Dorset," suggesting the camp was located on the Isle of Portland in County Dorset. The photograph of German soldiers receiving salvaged clothing, lists the location as "Burton-on-hill, England."

The Prisoner of War Preliminary Records forms list name, rank, date and place of birth, date and place of capture, occupation, military unit, and physical features and distinguishing marks of each prisoner.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection is comprised of four photographs of German prisoners of war, and three photographs of the Prisoner of War intake records for Christa Schroeder (listed as Secretary to Adolf Hitler), Joachim von Ribbentrop, and Hermann Goering.

The prisoner of war photographs depict German soldiers arriving at the camp, being processed by camp staff, eating meals, and receiving clothing. All these photographs are stamped "confidential," and have been approved for publication by the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) Field Press Censor. All but one were taken by a photographer named Pearson at European Theater of Operations Headquarters (ETO-HQ), but the exact location of all the camps pictures is unknown.
