Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The city of Port Townsend, Washington, was founded in 1851 and is located approximately 40 miles Northwest of Seattle. Port Townsend has a population of approximately 8,925 and is the county seat and only incorporated city of Jefferson County. The bay was originally named "Port Townshend" by Captain George Vancouver (for his friend the Marquis of Townshend) in 1792.
