Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Montana state legislature authorized the creation of the University of Montana, which would be located in Missoula, on February 13, 1893. This University Publications (UPUBs) collection is comprised of serials, single issue publications and reports, and ephemera produced by various offices and departments of the University of Montana and compiled by the Mansfield Library's Archives and Special Collections into one collection to facilitate organization, description, and access.
The bulk of the UPUBs collection is comprised of serial publications such as newsletters, journals, catalogs, bulletins, magazines, and newspapers. Some of the materials were produced by university offices while others were produced by student organizations. There is also a significant amount of ephemera produced for the university community and the public at large including flyers, posters, Christmas cards, postcards, and pamphlets. Most of the materials in this collection, in particular the ephemera, represents only a sampling of what any one office or organization created. Coverage of any particular subject or department on campus is not comprehensive.
The collection contains a large run of the University of Montana Bulletin publication. The Bulletin is unique because it was published as six issues each year, but each issue was produced by a different University department or office. It is also unique because it includes a number of individual serial publications including the State University of Montana Studies Bulletin, the University of Montana Studies Bulletin, Psychological Bulletin, Biological Bulletin, Geological Bulletin, the Folder, and the Booklet. Due to the complexity of the publication, the entire serial run of the Bulletin is not housed together within this collection; rather, each issue is housed with other materials produced by the office that produced that Bulletin issue.
UPUBs does not contain documents that were created for internal use such as meeting minutes, correspondence, memos, manuals and interoffice reports. It also does not include any unpublished documents produced by students such as class reports, papers, and assignments.
Since its inception the university has gone through numerous administrative, departmental and programatic changes as well as several name changes (including being called Montana State University from 1935-1965.) As of 2020, the University of Montana-Missoula is comprised of the following schools and colleges: W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation, College of Humanities and Sciences, College of Health, the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education, College of Business, Alexander Blewett III School of Law, College of The Arts and Media, Davidson Honors College, and the Graduate School. The university is also home to two libraries: the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library and the William J. Jameson Law Library. The School of Extended and Lifelong Learning provides extension and noncredit educational opportunities for professional development and personal growth. The University of Montana-Missoula also oversees two 2-year college campuses: Bitterroot College in Hamilton and Missoula College in Missoula.

Custodial History
Most items in this UPUBs collection were received by the Archives through campus mail or acquired by the Archives through donations of faculty papers and university office records.
Acquisition Information
Details have not been maintained concerning the immediate source of acquisition of the vast majority of the materials in this collection.
Future Additions
Additional publications will be acquired by the Archives and placed into this UPUBs collection.
Processing Note
The items in each subseries are organized alphabetically by originating office. With the exception of ephemera, items are then filed alphabetically by publication title when possible. In most cases, materials are foldered chronologically.
Some items in the collection were produced by a subordinate office of a particular originating office. Those materials are foldered separately and filed directly after materials produced by the main originating office. The office title is listed as main originating office followed by subordinate office and separated by a colon. There are a number of materials in the collection that don’t list an originating office. In these cases the originating office is listed as “unknown.” These items have been included in the location that seems most appropriate. A brief note describing each serial, single publication, or report accompanies most of the entries. In some instances the information is contained in quotation marks, which indicates that this text was taken directly from the publication’s introduction or preface. The notes for the Ephemera subseries are not comprehensive and do not refer to every item produced by a particular originating office. For a better understanding of what materials produced by a particular originating office are available, refer to the additional keywords.
All ephemera is organized alphabetically by the originating office title listed on the most recently published item in the folder. The materials are not listed individually by item title or subject. Instead, ephemera produced by a particular originating office is grouped under the title “Miscellaneous.”
