Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Eva Adele Holder was born in 1882 in East Portland, Oregon, the daughter of Joseph Holder (1849-1923) and Frances Kent Holder (1846-1920). Joseph Holder worked as a saloon keeper and grocer. Eva Holder taught gardening classes in the 1930s. In her later life, she developed an interest in Theosophy and the Unity School of Christianity. Holder died in 1968.

The collection consists of the papers of Eva Holder and her family, including correspondence, ephemera, and religious materials. Correspondence includes letters from Ella Welge to Holder and letters to Holder's mother, Frances "Fannie" Kent Holder, from her first husband, Frank Plummer. Religious material in the collection consists of correspondence, notes, study guides, and publications relating to Theosophy and to the Unity School of Christianity. Other materials include Holder's school records from the 1890s, permits and receipts, and a six-page account by Holder about the emigration of her grandparents, Horace Kent and Deborah Kent, to Oregon in 1853.

Acquisition Information

Account of Horace Kent and Deborah Kent's journey to Oregon was the gift of Eva Holder, December 1948 (Lib. Acc. 7801). School records and letters from Frank Plummer were the gift of Eva Holder, November 1960 (Lib. Acc. 9068). Other materials were most likely the gift either of Eva Holder or of her estate, in 1967 or later (RL2023-089-RETRO).
