Summary: This collection is a subgroup (Division) of the Montana Department of Livestock records, RS 500. Please see the primary finding aid for more Montana Department of Livestock records. These records (1974-1982) of the Animal Health and Food Safety Division (formerly named Animal Health Division) of the Department of Livestock consist of general correspondence, interoffice correspondence, miscellany, and clippings. The correspondence is arranged by the bureau that wrote or received the correspondence, including the administration, Animal Health Division, Diagnostic Laboratory Bureau, Disease Control Bureau, the Milk and Egg Bureau, and the staff attorney. Correspondence addresses brucellosis, leptospirosis, pseudorabies, and various other diseases affecting livestock.

Historical NoteReturn to Top

In 1971 the Livestock Sanitary Board, administered by the State Veterinary Surgeon, was abolished and its functions transferred to the Board of Livestock. The Board of Livestock, in turn, vested those functions in the Animal Health Division. The State Veterinarian became the administrator of the new division. The Animal Health Division was charged with the control and eradication of animal diseases and the prevention of the transmission of animal diseases to humans. The Division had three Bureaus, the Diagnostic Laboratory Bureau, the Disease Control Bureau, and the Milk and Egg Bureau. As of 2024, the Division name is Animal Health and Food Safety Division.

These records consist primarily of general correspondence. The general correspondence is arranged according to the bureau which received or created the correspondence. Within the bureau it is arranged alphabetically by organization, topic, or bureau. The State Veterinarian was the administrator of the division and the administration correspondence is composed primarily of his records. The collection also includes interoffice correspondence, miscellany, and clippings.

Processing Note

In 2024, the various collections of the Department of Livestock were integrated under one collection identifier, RS 500, in order to help facilitate access, reduce redundancy in the Montana Historical Society Library & Archives catalog, and to follow best archival practices.

Collections from the Department of Livestock's Divisions and Boards that were previously treated as separate entities are now integrated into this collection, RS 500. Rather than reprocessing over 50 linear feet of Livestock materials, MTHS staff decided to keep the past arrangement of those collections/finding aids and provide access to them via links in this central finding aid. This decision has allowed the MTHS archival staff to maintain intellectual control over the collection, while removing the need to reprocess it. It also keeps State Agency finding aids at manageable sizes. Please read the Content Note carefully to determine if this subgroup/sub-subgroup pertains to your research needs.
