Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Irma Z. Rodenhouse (1907-1996) was born in Seattle, Washington, the second child of a former agriculture professor turned mechaized farming visionary and a Minneapolis debutante daughter of a wheat baron. She graduated from Roosevelt High School and from the University of Washington. During WWII she joined the Netherlands Society, part of the United Nations Relief Organization where she helped run multicultural pageants as fund-raisers, and also collected food, blankets, and clothing for refugees who were in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. Her work was acknowledged and she was personally thanked by Queen Wilhelmina and the Netherlands Consulate.
She taught at Ballard High School, retiring in 1973. She also participated in the Mountaineers Players. She loved learning and was still taking classes until shortly before her death. She also loved travel and learning about Northwest Indian art and culture, visiting art colonies on Vancouver Island at K'san and Skidegate and using her knowledge at age 85 to create information booth displays at the Mountaineers' Kitsap Rhododendron Preserve.
