Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Archie Sidel was born in Grodno, Belarus in 1890 and came to Seattle with his family in 1893. After attending South School on Beacon Hill, he worked in his older brother's tailor shop, first learning to sew and then working in sales. He married Annie Goffe at age 22 in a synagogue in Bellingham. After World War I, he opened a cleaning and pressing shop in which he accumulated substantial capital. With his son, he opened Don's Men's Shop after World War II.

Tape-recorded interview conducted by Meta Kaplan and Karyl Winn on June 26, 1972 and covering the years 1893-1950.
Sidel discusses his migration to Seattle and his work as a tailor and owner in the men's clothing business. He also discusses his mother's baking for the synagogue (Bikur Cholim), Rabbi Gens, and businesses in which Jews engaged in Bellingham at the turn of the century.
