John B. Appleton was born in England about 1891. He emigrated to the United States and became a citizen in 1929. J.B. J.B. ApplAppleton was a geographer, educated at the University of London, the University of Besançon, France; and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He was a social science research fellow at Oxford in 1931. Dr Appleton taught on the faculties of the universities of Illinois, North Carolina, Michigan, and British Columbia, and at Claremont College and Scripps College.

Appleton was a member of the British cavalry and the Royal Air Force and served in the Near East during World War I. He traveled in Asia in the mid- 1930s and was a research fellow at the College of Chinese Studies in Beijing [Peiping]. Appleton was project director for the Rockefeller Foundation from 1938-1943. During World War II he served with the Far East Division of the Office of Strategic Services. In 1945 he became a geographic advisor to the Department of State, and later was a foreign affairs officer, ending as director of special research projects for intelligence.

Appleton was a member of the Cosmos Club and the Association of American Geographers, former president of the Portland Council for Adult Education and the Pacific Coast Geography Association. He was formerly vice president of the Northwest Science Association.

John Appleton was married to Irma and they had one daughter, Margaret. He had a sister and a brother. John Appleton died June 24, 1953.

The collection documents Appleton's travels in China, Japan, Korea and Manchuria in the 1930s including his passage through Oahu, Aden Port Said, Malta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The primary subject matter is the monuments of China and Japan, the landscapes and agriculture, and the lives of the workers. Aspects of rice, soybean and tea cultivation are captured, as are silkworm cultivation and silk processing; coal mining; and steel processing. Appleton was a meticulous observer and analyst. Relations between China and Japan are examined and the difference between Chinese and Japanese management in Manchuria; Appleton toured Nanking in 1935-1936, shortly before the Japenses invasion.

The collection consists of three manuscripts of commentary and analysis of the culture and the economy and infrastructure, illustrated by 21 reels of 16 mm film, 64 lantern slides, and 21 scrapbooklets containing 1,151 photographic prints or post cards, many with captions.
