The University of Washington Departments of Botany and Zoology merged in 2003 to form the Department of Biology. With over 1,700 undergraduate majors, the Department of Biology is the largest undergraduate degree program at the University of Washington and the largest STEM degree program in Washington State.
Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
Gordon Orians is a Professor Emeritus of Biology at the University of Washington, where he taught from 1960 to 1995. He holds a PhD in Zoology from the University of California, Berkeley. His topics of study included behavioral ecology, such as habitat selection, mate selection and mating systems, selection of prey and foraging patches (foraging theory), and relationships between ecology and social organization. Blackbirds of the Family Icteridae were his primary interest. Orians was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1989, and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1990.

The collection consists of a wide variety of audio and visual materials produced by the University of Washington Department of Biology, circa 1957-1990. Items in this collection respresent behavioral studies collected by staff in the department, the subjects being a wide range of wildlife species. Information includes audio and visual studies of species, as well as charts that compile data pertaining to the studies. The name of University of Washington biologist Gordon Orians is associated with several items in the collection.
