Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Jasper W. Johnson was an early pioneer in the Northwest. Born in Indiana on October 31, 1837, he was one of several sons born to the Reverend William Johnson. In 1846, he emigrated with his family to Oregon before it was a territory of the United States and then eventually settled in an area east of Portland. In 1857, he was admitted to the Oregon Bar and in 1858 he moved to Seattle where he was elected Auditor of King County and later Adjutant General of the Territory. In this latter capacity, he was influential in a number of Territorial events, including the Pig War on the San Juan Islands.
