Intaglio, Inc. is a historical research and publishing company founded by Henry C. Dethloff in 1983. Dethloff and his associates have written and published a variety of books on American history, astronomy and science. The National Forests of the Northern Region authors were Robert D. Baker, Larry Burt, Robert S. Maxwell, Victor H. Treat and Henry C. Dethloff. They completed the forests history under a USDA Forest History Unit contract in 1989.

This collection contains research materials used and compiled by Intaglio, Inc. during the research and writing of A Living Legend: The National Forests of the Northern Region, 1908-1988 which was published by the U. S. Forest Service as The National Forests of the Northern Region: Living Legacy. These materials include United States Forest Service Publications, newspaper clippings, interview transcripts, correspondence between various Forest Service employees, pamphlets and guides, manuscript drafts, manuscript critiques and reviews, as well as hand written research notes.Although this book was the work of five different individuals, this collection contains the research gathered by Henry C. Dethloff, the founder and head of Intaglio, Inc.
This collection has been divided into five series. Series I, Histories and Interviews, includes histories written by Forest Service employees concerning specific aspects of Region One, oral history transcripts of interviews with former Forest Service employees, biographies of former Forest Service employees and self-interview forms filled out by retired Forest Service staff.
Series II contains research materials, divided by chapter during the processing, including reports and memorandum from Forest Service employees and staff members, publications and speeches about or concerning Region One activities, instruction manuals for employees, recreation and wildlife pamphlets published by the Forest Service, correspondence relating to the Forest Service activities in Region One, Forest Service press releases, newspaper articles concerning Region One, and reports made by The University of Montana concerning the impact of the Forest Service on the environment.
Series III contains a variety of materials from the researcher Bill Sharp concerning the history of the Civilian Conservation Corp in Region One. These materials include Sharp’s notes on newspaper articles relating to the C.C.C., newsletters, casualty lists and copies of photographs and newspaper articles.
Series IV contains drafts of the manuscript, critiques of the work by former Forest Service Employees and correspondence concerning the research and editing of the manuscript
Series V contains further research materials not directly related to specific chapters in the book, including guides to National Forests, magazines and journals, reforestation summaries, and job descriptions.

Processing Note
The original arrangement of the collection was largely maintained. Unorganized segments of research materials were arranged by the processor according to book chapter.
Separated Materials
United States Department of Agriculture publications, government maps of National Forests, and other published materials were separated during processing and all of these items have been placed within the general library collection.
Related Materials
Other documents relating to the Forest Service, Region One can be found in the Harry T. Gisborne Papers, Mss 98, held at the K. Ross Toole Archives at The University of Montana. The Archives also holds a copy of the draft of the Forest Service Publication, entitled A Living Legend: The National Forests of the Northern Region, 1908-1988. The Henry C. Dethloff Papers are held at the Cushing Memorial Library in College Station, Texas. Further research materials relating to the Civilian Conservation Corps can also be found in Mss 591, the Bill Sharp Papers.
