Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Professor of Far Eastern Studies, University of Washington, and director of Chinese Dynastic Histories Project.

Karl August Wittfogel was born 1896. The goal of the Chinese Dynastic Histories Project was to translate the histories of the twenty-four dynasties into English and to publish the text of each accompanied by critical and explanatory commentary. The project began in the late 1930s in Peking, China and continued at the University of Washington and at Columbia University in New York. Until 1986 the project records were separated--some at Columbia and some at the Univestiy of Washington. More Information on the project is available by reading Dr. Wittfogel's pamphlet,"New Light on Chinese Society: An Investigation of China's Socio-Economic Structure," 1938; and Gary L. Ulmen's book, "The Science of Society: Toward an Understanding of the Life and work of Karl A. Wittfogel," 1978.
