Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
The Seattle Press-Times was bought by Alden J. Blethen in 1896 and began publication under its new name, The Seattle Times, in 1981. As of 2015, it is the largest daily newspaper in the state of Washington.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer was, until 2009, Seattle's oldest running newspaper. Founded in 1863, the newspaper was bought by the Hearst Corporation in 1921, and ran until March 17th, 2009, when the declining demand for printed newspapers forced the Hearst Corporation to suspend publication.
Seattle Weekly was founded in 1976 and is the largest community news organization in Washington state.
The Walla Walla Union was founded in 1868 as a Republican Party newspaper to counter the democratic leanings of the Washington Statesman (Walla Walla's first newpaper founded in 1861). The Walla Walla Union merged with the Walla Walla Bulletin (founded in 1906) in 1934 into the Union-Bulletin.
