Historical NoteReturn to Top

Duncan Aikman (1889-1955) was a journalist and author. He has worked for the Springfield (Massachusetts) Republican, the El Paso Times, and served in varying editorial capacities for the Los Angeles Daily News. In 1935, he became a free-lance writer, and in the early 1940's he helped to organize the newspaper PM. His books include Calamity Jane and the Lady Wildcats,The Taming of the Frontier, The All American Front, andThe Turning Stream.

Collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, tear sheets, newspaper tear sheets, poetry, Guggenheim Foundation proposal, miscellaneous notes, biographical information, photographs, and magazines with articles by Aikman.

Correspondence is arranged into two subgroups: Professional and Personal. Correspondence within these groups are arranged alphabetically. Correspondents include W.W. Norton, his mother, Blair Bolles, his daughter Cicely, H.M. Murdock. Out going mail includes hospital letters and letters to Mrs. Lonnelle Aikman.

Manuscripts are divided into five sections: book length, magazine articles, speeches, editor queries and pamphlets. Book length manuscript is of Americas Unite. Articles include "The Practical Politician," and "Frontier South." The pamphlet was written for the War Department and labeled "Mexico."

Tear sheets and articles by Aikman include those from the American Mercury, The Atlantic, ColliersHarpers New York Post, New York Times, and The Washington post.

There is also a proposal for a grant for the Guggenheim Foundation.
