Four of the fourteen court documents refer to cases involving a William Smith who might have been Joseph Smith's brother. The first case in which Smith was the defendant dealt with an alleged debt incurred with a sale of land from the plaintiff to Smith. The second case in which Smith was the plaintiff concerned an unspecified charge against Harmon Wilson who was the sheriff of the city of Carthage, Illinois.
