The George W. Taggart papers (1846-1847, 1978) consist of a typescript of Taggart's journals and letters to his wife, and a brief postscript to the story written by his grandson, Spencer L. Taggart. The originals are located in the LDS Church Historian's Office. The journal describes Taggart's journey from Nauvoo to California with the Mormon Battalion. Included are descriptions of preparations, the route, council meetings, sickness and deaths, and encounters with Indians. Letters to his wife Fanny express more personal details, including instructions about the children, discusssions of money, and Taggart's motivation for joining the battalion. Spencer L. Taggart's postcript gives the history of the battalion after the end of the war with Mexico and details his grandfather's journey to Utah.
