Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection is the correspondence of Dean Gregory in his positions as a pastor of multiple monthly meetings and as the General Superintendent of the Oregon Yearly Meeting/Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends. Early documents refer to his call as a pastor of the Friends Church. In later years they deal with the struggle of the Oregon Yearly Meeting to remain pacifist during the draft for the Vietnam War. Materials include the information packet given to conscientious objectors heading to Vietnam to perform alternate service duties and materials on options for pacifists drafted during wartime.

The majority of the collection is devoted to Gregory’s correspondence in his position as General Superintendent of the Oregon Yearly Meeting. In this time, the Yearly Meeting broke tied with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), the correspondence in this collection contains folders devoted to this subject which accuse the AFSC of communist motives.

The final parts of this collection are letters received by Dean Gregory during the illness leading up to his death in 1970.
