Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Morris Tacher was born in Constantinople in about 1887 and served in the Turkish Army from 1908 to 1913. He married Zelda, daughter of Chana Caston, in 1913. The Tachers came to Seattle on their honeymoon because Morris's brother was there; they ended up staying in the United States and became citizens. He opened a "kavane" (a gathering place for Sephardic Jewish men) in 1915. Morris opened another kavane in 1920 called The Turkish Restaurant at 1313 ½ First Ave in Seattle; this was later moved to the Sanitary Market. After WW II he opened the Cozy Corner Lunch Restaurant in the Pike Place Market. The restaurant served roast lamb, Sephardic rice, grape leaves stuffed with meat, baklava, and marzipan.
