Historical NoteReturn to Top
Frederick Gardiner was born on 12 November 1832 in Chalford Hill, Gloucestershire, England. He was baptized into the LDS Church in 1845 and emigrated to America in 1849. He migrated to Utah in 1851 and married Sarah Smith two years later. Gardiner moved his family back and forth from Utah to New Orleans, finally settling in Salt Lake City in 1869. He died on 4 July 1903.

The Frederick Gardiner diary (1832-1869) discusses Gardiner's early life in England, his journey to America, and life events up until the late 1860s. Subjects discussed are many. Gardiner described in detail his life once he arrived in New Orleans in 1849. He recorded information about steamboat travel, mosquitos, the enslaved people trade, his jobs and pay, his traveling companions, the weather, rivers traversed, his medical training, buffalo sightings, his first look at the Salt Lake Valley, instructions from Brigham Young, illnesses, American Indians, Johnston's Army, and conditions during the Civil War.
