Biographical Note
Clara McCarty Wilt (1858-1929) was the first person to graduate from the Territorial University of Washington (now the University of Washington) in 1876 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduating, McCarty became a teacher and was the first woman elected Superintendent of Schools in Pierce County, Washington in 1880.
