Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Thomas McArthur Anderson was born January 21, 1836 in Ross County, Ohio to William Marshall Anderson, an attorney, and Eliza Anderson. Anderson attended St. Mary's College and Cincinnati Law School. For three years starting in 1858, he was practicing law in Cincinnati. In 1861, Anderson enlisted as a private in the 65th Ohio Volunteers and became Second Lieutenant of the 5th U.S. Cavalry. He was promoted to captain with the 12th U.S. Infantry and remained in the army after the Civil War becoming a colonel in command of the 14th Infantry at the Fort Vancouver Barracks from 1886-1898. He married Elizabeth VanWinkle circa 1870. He was a member of the Oregon Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He retired from service in 1900 and died May 8, 1917 in Portland, Oregon.
