Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Bonus Expeditionary Force was a group of World War I veterans that marched on Washington, D.C in 1932 to demand early payment of bonus certificates that they were unable to redeem until 1945. George Kleinholz was regimental commander of the Oregon group of the Bonus Expeditionary Force.
Thousands of veterans marched on the Capitol in June 1932. They spent weeks camped in D.C while congress debated early payment of their bonuses. The Herbert Hoover administration, fearing possible riots, sent in military troops to quash the demonstration; the troops were commanded by General Douglas McArthur and Major Dwight Eisenhower. The troops used bayonets and tear gas to disperse the veterans and their families on July 28, 1932.
