Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Cosmos Club organized in Missoula, Montana, on April 17, 1896, and is still active. The founder of the club was Oscar J. Craig, the first president of the University of Montana. An organization for men and women, the goal of this club, according to its constitution, is "the extension and refinement of all our sympathies." To achieve this goal, Cosmos Club members present papers and topics of conversation on a wide array of topics. Examples of topics covered by the club were: book reviews, explaining the atom bomb, "Meeting Life and Surviving," spinning, the making of Montana, Arabia, art and democracy, religion and science, and the Pacific rim.

The collection is divided into five series:

Custodial History
Collection remained in the possession of members of the Cosmos Club until donation to the archives.

Gift of Cosmos Club, 1986, 2001, and 2004.
Processing Note
The actions of the original processors are unknown. In 1998, the collection was updated and re-described, with unprocessed materials added in. In 2001 and 2004 additional materials were received and integrated into the collection.

This series contains the minutes to the bimonthly meetings of the Cosmos Club. Included in the minutes are roll call, financial statements, old business, club election results, mock presidential and state election results, and presented programs.

Included in this series are the written papers presented during the meetings. Topics include: the state constitution and higher education, Pablo Neruda, behavioral and political freedom, air pollution, C.G. Jung and Femininity and Masculinity, Alger Hiss, geographical problems connected with the traveler's rest of Lewis and Clark, the Indian village of Ozette, the Antarctic, federal taxes, the tribe of the stone age people Ainu and China today. The second folder includes papers about unbreakable codes, the history of the Cosmos Club, religious cults, Betty Friedan, notes of a slide show from a trip to Japan, labor relations, the lost colony of Roanoke Island, Vietnam, British India, America and China, perceptions and policy 1941-1945, thoughts on current feminist theory, the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence, AIDS in Africa, U.S. trade policies, the American agricultural situation, the effect of diet on certain cancers, and estate taxes.

Series IV: Organizational Duties and Projects , 1906-2004Return to Top
This series contains correspondence including thank you notes for donations of library materials, the K. Ross Toole archives, scholarship fund and biology station. Correspondence also consists of resignation letters from the club as well as a letter from the Missoula festival of the arts. This series also includes newspaper articles about club member George Turman, the biology station funded by a club member, the federal court striking down a creationist law and a tribute to club member C.W. Leaphart. Finally, this series contains poems written by club members for the traditional Christmas, club recipes, and club history. party.
