Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Oregon State Medical Society was originally organized in 1874. As time went on, reorganizations occurred and among them were the creation of the Medical History Committee, which ultimately was put in the charge of Eldon G. Chuinard; and the Woman's Auxiliary which was created on September 1, 1927 under Mrs. J. Earl Else, Mrs. Courtland Booth, Mrs. C. E. Hunt, and Mrs. W. B. Neal. It was the first auxiliary in the Northwest, and Mrs. Else became its first president.

County auxiliaries began to organize the same year in Lane Co., with Multnomah Co. following in 1928, initially as the Portland City and County Auxiliary, with Mrs. Charles Edwin Sears as president. Polk-Yamhill-Marion was 3rd (1929); then Jackson (1931); Clatsop-Tillamook, Klamath & Lake (1932); Benton (1934); Coos-Curry (1937); Josephine (1938); Mid-Columbia (1939); and Malheur, Baker, and Umatilla (1943).
