Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Reno Carmack papers consists of correspondence to and from Carmack, journals written by Carmack, and manuscripts written by Carmack. The correspondence consists primarily of letters written by Carmack and his family while he traveled in September 1939 from eastern Washington to Chicago on a stock train. Also included are postcards, newspaper clippings mailed to Carmack by his mother, and letters from the United States Department of Agriculture about the Carmack family farm acreage. Journals include an undated account of his September 1938 stock train trip from Spokane, Washington to Chicago, Illinois and back, scans of Carmack's 1931 account of living in Portland, Oregon, and scans of Carmack's account of his September 1933 trip to visit his brother Verba in Chicago, Illinois via a stock train. Included with these accounts are a typed manuscript of the September 1933 journal entries, scans of six September 1933 postcards to Clarice Carmack, and scans of an April 1932 weekly Portland street car pass. Manuscripts include "Sixty Years Have Passed", Carmack's account of the first sixty years of his life, "The Sylvan School", Carmack's account of School District No. 98 in Spokane County, and "Journal of a Trip on a Stock Train", an edited version of Carmack's earlier account of his September 1933 trip to Chicago.
