Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Sarah Amelia Ware Palmer (informally known as "Millie" or "Amelia"), was born in 1894 to engineer Stephen Noland Ware and Maggie B. Bennett in Wyoming. Amelia spent her early life in Wyoming with her parents, where she was the second youngest of four siblings. She attended the University of Washington from 1914-1918 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. During her time at the university she met, dated, and later married James Clarence Palmer. James was born in North Dakota in 1893. He also attended the university, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1916. He later worked for the Wittenberg King Company. During the couple's time at school, James was a non-deployed cadet. Shortly after their wedding, James was drafted and stationed at the Vancouver Barracks and Fort Lewis. Amelia and James lived in Seattle until his death on January 16, 1956; she died in 1989.

James and Sarah's daughter, Marjorie Palmer Passler, graduated from the University of Washington in 1956. She was a member of the Garfield High School Golden Grads, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Sororia Alumnae of the University of Washington. Her brother, 2nd Lt. Philip E. Palmer, was a University of Washington student who died while serving in World War II.

Accession No. 5350-001: Sarah Amelia Ware scrapbook, 1914-1918Return to Top

.92 cubic feet (1 box)

Scope and Content: The Sarah Amelia Ware scrapbook follows her life during her time at the University of Washington and depicts campus life during the years 1914-1918. It contains numerous clippings focused on theatrical events, military involvement in the First World War, fashion, Greek life, dances, and education. Also included are commencement programs and pictures of graduation. Greek life memorabilia relates specifically to her membership in the Alpha Xi Delta sorority and her relationship with fellow student and future husband, James Palmer, who belonged to the Kappa Psi fraternity. There also are many dance invitations and dance cards related to Greek life. University of Washington sporting events are also well documented, particularly Ware's apparent interest in the crew team. ASUW season tickets, UW flags, and field day programs can be found. Other documents related to UW life are pictures of campus and areas around campus: Denny Hall, the observatory, the Drumheller fountain, snowy pictures of campus, the engineering building, the university Masonic lodge, Snoqualmie Falls, and boating life. A large amount of the documents within the book relate to the military service of James Palmer, including official military enlistment documents, telegrams, letters, military ball invitations and dance cards, as well as images of James in uniform with other cadets. Pictures of soldiers' quarters and line photos are also included at both the Vancouver Barracks and Camp Lewis. Another large portion of the scrapbook is dedicated to performing arts. Programs from musical, play, glee club, dance, and concert performances both on and off the UW campus are displayed. Amelia was even involved in several of the musical recitals. Most prominently, the scrapbook details her honeymoon and the early days of her marriage. The scrapbook contains love letters and telegrams between the two, photographs, and several newspaper announcements about their wedding.
